Ball Lake Nature Preserve
Ball Lake Nature Preserve protects a woodland. While nice, I wouldn't rate it as worth a long trip.
White discs nailed to trees mark the trail. You’ll duck immediately into recent-growth woods, skirting areas wet enough to support skunk cabbage.
There are large patches of May apple and mosquitoes galore. After reaching, then turning to follow, a ravine, the trail emerges along a road.
The return leg is via a much overgrown path - watch for the white discs. Alternatively, return along the entrance path.
Steuben County. From the intersection of IN 1 and IN 427 in Hamilton, go west 1.7 miles on Bellfontaine Rd to Lane 101, and then left 0.3 miles to the ACRES sign, just before the road curves to the right.
